Along with the physical moves that help students defend themselves under attack, Education Activist and Mount Laurel martial artist, Peter Liciaga also teaches the verbal skills that are needed to ward off verbal abuse.

“Children and adults alike face issues of harassment and bullying – on the playground, at school and in the workplace,” said master martial artist and certified Verbal Self Defense instructor, Peter Liciaga. “They need the skills to prevent verbal attacks from escalating, and — maybe one day — save their lives.”

“Bullying and verbal violence are growing problems today that require practical solutions,” Liciaga added. Because many people who are bullied turn to martial arts schools to learn defensive techniques and assertiveness, Liciaga said this program greatly enhances the school’s curriculum.

Peter Liciaga has been trained in Verbal Self Defense – Youth Program, involving the principles of Verbal Judo, created some 27 years ago by Dr. George Thompson.

The goal of Verbal Judo is to redirect negative behavior and reduce conflict through verbal communication. It teaches professional communication tactics for high-pressure situations, such as anger control and deflecting personal verbal attacks.

When these techniques were adapted for youth, Peter Liciaga became one of a select number of martial arts instructors across the country that has trained in Verbal Judo techniques.
